Side By Side

What is the responsibility of a curator, anyway? What happens when an artist disappears from view? Who can we trust in our working relationships?

These are some of the questions behind Side by Side, a new monthly publishing project by Between Works. Each issue begins with a question arising from contemporary art practice and brings writing, artistic perspectives, and conversation side by side. Future themes include visibility, beauty, trust, freedom, and the standards we set for our work.

The first issue of Side by Side is planned for 28 October 2026.

Side By Side comes from a love of art and of talking about how it’s made, who it’s for, and what its value might be. Each issue focuses on a different theme in the art world, from attention, beauty and age, to responsibility, meaningful work, fear and freedom.

Alongside my reflections on each topic through my work as a curator, writer, and arts organisation director, I also invite an artist to share what stops them in their tracks. I admire artists because their way of looking at the world differs from how I, the non-artist, see it; that’s what makes their understanding and perspective so important. I’ll also include a list of references for each issue’s theme.

This project is for artists, curators, writers, and cultural practitioners who want to think critically about the structures, assumptions and challenges shaping contemporary art. It offers space to explore the issues we encounter in our work and to imagine alternative ways forward. Readers are warmly invited to participate by sharing their thoughts, stories and questions.

Side By Side is written by Eloise Sweetman, edited by Jack Eden Art, and designed by Nicha Keeratiphanthawong.
